Old Plant, New Plant

401 Richmond Street West is an old plant. When the building ran as a tin factory (originally Macdonald Manufacturing and then Continental Can) it was called Plant 90. Now restored and heritage designated it is home to a thriving community of artists, non-profits, designers, filmmakers, festivals, galleries, businesses, musicians, and shops. For almost two decades Urbanspace Property Group has undertaken a number of eco-restoration projects (roof garden, courtyard, tree planting) bringing the green back that was pushed out by bricks and mortar. This blog chronicles the most recent projects – the story of our new plants.

Look what we discovered in the roof garden…in April! We have five bunches of rainbow swiss chard that are already growing strong in this uncharacteristic balmy weather and are living up to their nickname “perpetual spinach”!

Not so glamorous, but oh so essential to happy plants, 401 Richmond’s rooftop compost system transforms kitchen scraps from the cafe and management office into a nutrient-packed soil amendment.  Mixing in dry,  carbon-rich leaves and plant material creates an environment that sometimes reaches 60°C! Earthworms and other compost organisms help with the decomposition process.
